Ford’s Story of Success and Pride

The headquarter of Ford is in Dearborn, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. This is the place where the ex-chief engineer of the Edison Illuminating Company, named Henry Ford founded the, “Ford Motor Company”, on June 16, 1903 with a capital amount of $28,000 along with twelve other investors. The famous scientist Thomas Alva Edison was a great friend of Henry Ford and he encouraged him to go ahead with his idea and dream of establishing an automobile company which will manufacture simple and affordable car for the Americans.

At the beginning only two to three workers worked on each car. On July 23, 1903 the company sold its first produced car, Ford Model A and Dr. Ernst Pfennig a dentist from Chicago, became the first owner. Other car manufacturers made cars for wealthy people but Ford developed a design and manufacturing method that reduced the price of the Model T, which made its debut in 1908 at a price of $825. In its first year a record sale of over 10,000 cars was reached. Four years later the price dropped to $575. By 1914 Ford claimed a share of 48% of the automobile market. The car was sold like hot cakes. With the rise in demand, Ford was able to reduce the assembly time of the Model T from 12.5 hours to less than 6 hours. Ford created history and became the change maker of the automobile market.

World War 1 came to be a turning point as it changed the course of automotive history. Henry Ford was able to draw a large profit at that time. Ford Model T cars were used by the several armies for war purpose. It not only served as ambulances but also as delivery trucks, staff cars and artillery movers. As soon as America joined the war, Ford started producing ambulances, trucks, vans, tanks and submarine chasers. Ford’s Trafford Park factory in Manchester supplied the British army with 30,000 Model Ts as ambulances and transporters of troops, water and munitions carriers.

Australian Motorcycle Trips

Being such a vast, flat and open country, Australia is the ideal place to go on road trips; especially by bike. There is so much to explore, so many different places to visit and so much to see and do. In this article we’ll take a brief look at some locations for Australian motorcycle trips and what’s on offer.

Sydney Bike Spots

The nation’s largest city by population doesn’t have to mean spending all your time sitting on your bike stuck in traffic. There are places to go and things to see that your motorbike can take you. You may have to get out of town a little, but just north of Sydney you have the beautiful Hunter Valley, west are the Blue Mountains and National Parks and State Forest to the south.

The Blue Mountains is a World Heritage listed region, full of unspoilt scenery such as the Three Sisters. A bike ride here with a group of friends is something you must do, with many scenic and winding roads taking you right through the mountain ranges. There are plenty of places you can stop off for a coffee or bite to eat, and why not make a full day of it and go on a few bushwalks to the many waterfalls in the area.

The wine district of the picturesque Hunter Valley is right on Sydney’s doorstep. Ride the roads between the vineyards and sample some of the country’s best wines along the way.

If staying in the city, a ride to Sydney Heads or through Bondi can still be fun, or take a trip further down to the coastal regions of St George and Cronulla.

Perth Bike Trips

The city of Perth itself has some beautiful spots to take a bike ride to, such as Kings Park and Botanic Gardens. Or perhaps a ride nearby the Swan River or up to Fraser Avenue lookout. There are also some great wine areas within the region of this city.

My suggestion is to get your friends together and head out of town for a few days, following the coast south to Bunbury, the Margaret River and Albany, then circling back to Perth via an inland route. There are some great forest areas on this strip, with long stretches of winding road.

Another idea is to head west of Perth on a short trek to the historic town of York. It’s only about an hour from the city and you travel through some very scenic countryside.

The Perth region offers access to some of the best Australian motorcycle trips.

Melbourne Motorbike Trails

Here’s a list of some of the top Melbourne bike rides:

  1. Lerderderg State Forest – Head west out of the city, ride through Mount Macedon and on to Gisborne. At Trentham there are waterfalls you can visit, then stop off at the old Cobb & Co for lunch.
  2. Brisbane Ranges – Much the same direction as the trek above, here you can stop off at some abandoned mining settlements. Looping through the Brisbane Ranges makes for a challenging and scenic bike tour.
  3. Yarra Valley – There are plenty of roads to follow in this region and many places to visit, including the Yarra Valley Chocolaterie & Ice Creamery. Yum. Reefton Road has an interesting series of twists and turn as you head into Reefton.
  4. The Goldfields – This is a great ride, where you can not only travel through some fantastic scenery, but also take in the eeriness of the ghost towns and explore the Victorian Goldfields. Maybe you might even strike it lucky.
  5. Dandenong Ranges – The Dandenongs are the closest mountains to Melbourne city. Head through Mount Dandenong via the Tourist Road and take in the sights, then travel to Emerald for a bite to eat before moving on to Ferntree Gulley.

Brisbane Roads By Bikes

A trek around the Brisbane CBD and taking in the scenes of the Brisbane River can be a nice weekend ride. The other advantage to Brisbane is its access to nearby locales such as north to the Sunshine Coast, the Gold Coast to the south, or head west and explore the Scenic Rim.

Along the Scenic Rim – a favourite for motorcycle riders – there is the Glasshouse Mountains, areas such as Lake Moogerah (which is a nice ride), and further south there is all of the Gold Coast Hinterland with its National parks, bushwalks and waterfalls. If you have a few days to travel you can ride even deeper into the Scenic Rim and take in much more of this beautiful region.

3 Steps to Build a Motorcycle Exhaust From a Perforated Filter Tube

Fewer things in the world are more satisfying than a deep, throaty growl coming from a powerful motorcycle. Whether you’re dealing with a 450cc dirt bike or a 1100cc touring bike, putting the right exhaust on it can really enhance performance and improve that sound. That’s not to mention how much better a motorcycle looks with a shimmering stainless steel exhaust. However, aftermarket motocross and road bike manufacturers know how much you love a great exhaust. That’s why they try to charge as much as you might pay for the bike itself. Some straight-through systems, called drag pipes, can cost upwards of $1,000. That’s just for a straight length of metal tube. With a little bit of know-how and a perforated filter tube, you can make your own for a fraction of the cost. Here’s how to do that.

1. Start With The Pipes

There are two kinds of pipe bends. Crush bends are, as the name implies, pipes that look crushed where they’re bent. Mandrel bends are smooth bends without ripples. Those ridges in the metal cause turbulence that increases shaking and robs your motorcycle of power. If you can, get some mandrel bent pipes. You won’t regret the added expense.

2. Build Your Muffler

Next, you can proceed to build your muffler. That might sound difficult, but it’s actually pretty simple. A muffler cuts the amount of noise coming out of your exhaust because it slows down the gas coming out of the pipe. You just need a place to send that gas and something to slow it down.

Your muffler is going to consist of a perforated filter tube, a larger steel pipe to go around it, and some ceramic insulation to fill the space. The perforated tube will allow gas to escape through the dozens of different holes instead of just the end of the tube. The gas will then shoot into the ceramic insulation where it will slow down considerably. The slowing of the exhaust should reduce the noise.

It’s probably easier to make your perforated filter tube a little bit smaller than your exhaust pipe, so it slips inside the exhaust and helps create a little back pressure.

3. Put It All Together

You then want to weld it all together. You might need to contract a professional to put it together for you. Wrap the perforated filter tube in ceramic wool then weld it inside the larger tube. There you go. Just that quickly, you have a muffler. You’ll want to then weld the homemade muffler on the end of your exhaust. You’re ready to ride.

The benefit of making your own muffler is not just monetary. You’ll probably save some money, but you’ll also be able to customize your riding experience. What you have just built is called a straight-through muffler as opposed to a chambered muffler. Chambered mufflers are filled with baffles that disrupt the gas flow. If you want to reduce the sound even more, you can choose a longer perforated filter tube as your muffler core.

The Importance Of An Oil Cooler Upgrade For Your Motorcycle

For many motorcycle owners, proper maintenance of their ride is a very important thing. A lot of motorcycle owners make the mistake of thinking that motorcycle engines overheat simply because of the ambient air temperature. Many think that an air-cooled engine will suffice in keeping the engine cool.

The truth is that these are not necessarily true. On one hand, you have to factor in the poor quality of fuel currently available in the market today. Additionally, your bike may need an air cooler upgrade.

There are numerous benefits when you upgrade you air cooler. As you know, it cools oil by using a heat exchanger strategically placed behind the fans. It facilitates the flow of the oil through its fins even when the fans are not activated. Now, when the temperature of the oil breaches the 220 degree Fahrenheit mark, the fans will activate to blow air through it.

The fans will continue to blow air until the oil temperature is lowered to 190 degrees. The oil cooler will continue to work whether your motorcycle is moving or not, ensuring that the oil maintains a stable temperature. It does not add unnecessary noise as well. The fans of the oil cooler are quiet.

Additionally, you will not feel the air blasting from the fans because the air moves under the bike. Essentially, you will not even know that the oil cooler is there unless you look at its LED indicator which can be mounted practically anywhere you like to. Apart from cooling the oil and keeping the temperature of the motor at an acceptable level, an oil cooler offers additional benefits, including reduced ping and knock in the engine which translates to improved performance. This is also one of the reasons why many motorcycle owners invest in this upgrade.

Installing an air cooler is very easy. However, you need to make sure that you undertake all the recommended steps outlined by the manufacturer. Before installing the oil cooler, you will need to start your motorcycle and let it run idle for a few minutes. After that, shut the engine off and check for leaks. If you cannot find leaks, take your bike out for a quick spin. After riding for a few miles, stop your bike and turn off the engine to look for leaks. How Autonomous Cars Work

The self-driving technology is stated to be added to several different vehicle models as opposed to just one. It is expected that these vehicles will become collision-free and therefore resulting in zero casualties once they hit the road. Also aspires to make these autonomous vehicles affordable at a realistic price for its consumers, although it’s not yet stated exactly what those ‘affordable’ prices will be.

An autonomous car will feature a 360-degree vehicle monitoring system with an evolving Safety Shield, leaving the car monitored at all angles. The vehicles will feature two of the current released technologies.

Automatic lane centering and cruise control. Automatic freeway exiting, lane changes, stopping at red lights, and overtaking a slow or stopped vehicle will be new features on these vehicles. All of that will be implemented without driver involvement for these features to be activated. The all-around sensors will also warn the driver of any surrounding hazards so that the driver can react.

Also these vehicles could monitor incoming traffic while turning and overtaking, and side distance control (the latter works to avoid obstacles and steer away to avoid potential collisions). The technology also merges the car away from blocked roads and safely merges the vehicle into another lane, even if there is incoming traffic. In addition, these cars can also monitor against possible theft and can park themselves when prompted to do so. Just a few remarkable things on the already semi-long list of ‘tricks’ these vehicles can perform and it only promises to continue to get better.

So far, these vehicles have successfully (and safely) driven around a parked car, and entered to intersections during a lapse in traffic. This technology which consists of lasers scanners, cameras, advanced artificial intelligence and actuators which further extends the Safety Shield, helps implement real world scenarios so that the situations may be monitored and the car will be “taught” properly how to react. The cars need to react in the same way that a human driver would since these vehicles will be placed on the road with other human drivers, who may or may not be driving an autonomous vehicle.

Although the technology of these cars has advanced, there’s still a lot that needs to be done to ensure these cars will be safe on the road when they come to market at a dealer near in 2020. Advancements will include the ability to react to traffic lights and road signs, preventing the car from lane departure, and braking safely in traffic. The technology will also have to be advanced enough to differentiate between what is a hazard and what necessarily isn’t, to prevent any mishaps that could only potentially put the driver or other vehicles in danger. But Motor Chief Executive is confident they can get the technology to where it needs to be by the end of the decade.

By 2020, these cars should be able to drive on the highway without the need of external data or mapping, which is what will set driver-less cars apart from Google’s self-driving technology. The technology also won’t be limited to certain vehicles with a certain infrastructure.

The technology, which is currently being tested in Japan, will soon be tested on ‘proving grounds’ that’s set to be completed in 2016. Those grounds are testing facilities that will contain real buildings and real architecture to really put these advanced technology to the test.

Most of the terms used to describe a type of car refer to its body shape, rather than its performance, or other features. Sedan

A sedan, which is sometimes called a saloon, is the standard passenger car that has a bonnet at the front, a boot for luggage in the back, and usually four doors. This is one of the most popular types of car and they are ideal for families, as they usually seat four or five people comfortably.

Hatch-back

Hatch-backs are the types of cars that have no rear boot, but they have a rear compartment that can be accessed via a door that swings open at the back. The other feature of this type of car is that rear luggage compartment is not sealed off from the passenger compartment. Hatch-backs are usually smaller cars and they often have only three doors, including the swing door at the back.

Estate

Estate cars, or wagons, are like a larger version of a hatchback with an extended rear compartment for storing luggage. Like a hatchback, this type of cars luggage area is not separated from the passenger compartment and, usually, the rear seats can be folded down to accommodate a greater amount of luggage when it is required. Due to the extended rear compartment, estate cars are normally quite long.

Coupe

Convertible

Convertibles, sometimes called cabriolets, are the types of cars where the roof can be removed so that it can be driven with the roof open in the summer. The roof is often made of soft fabric; hence the term soft top, but more expensive convertibles might have hard tops that are folded back by hydraulics.

M.P.V

The term M.P.V, or multi-purpose vehicle, is usually applied to vehicles that have large bodies, like a van, but it still has both rear and side doors. Examples of M.P.V’s are people carriers, minivans, and multi utility vehicles (M.U.V’s). They can often seat as many as seven people and they are also characterised by being higher off the ground than a saloon type of car.

Pickup

Pickup trucks are the type of vehicle that has a flat-bed open space at the rear of the vehicle for carrying luggage and equipment. They are usually large vehicles, often 4×4, and they are designed to carry heavy loads, as well as people.

Off-Road

An off-road vehicle, such as a Land Rover, or a Jeep, will have been designed to be driven on the roads as well as off them. Typically, they will have a 4×4 drive, and the ability to be driven in very low gears, so that they can cope with muddy and difficult terrain.

Don’t let winter driving freak you out

Driving on snow and ice in winter conditions is tricky to master and can stress out even a seasoned driver, let alone a non-experienced winter driver. If you need to drive in extreme winter conditions, here are 7 tips you can use when old man winter hits your area with snow and icy conditions.

1) Drive only if it’s absolutely necessary. I know you have probably heard that over and over again, but it’s true. If you don’t go out in the bad weather, you can’t get in trouble on the road.

Is your journey really that important and necessary? What harm would come if you were delayed for an hour or so? Chances are for most of us… nothing would happen. Stay home and have an extra cup of coffee or a nice breakfast with your family. That will give the road crews more time to clear the roads.

2) Clean off all the snow and ice from your vehicle. If you don’t have a garage then by all means clear off all the snow and ice before getting on the road. Don’t just clear off a small area on the windshield so you can peek out.

3) Make sure you have a full tank of gas. This way if you get stuck in traffic, or in a snow bank, you can keep your heater going to stay warm. The extra weight can also help by giving you more traction.

4) Slow down and keep your distance. Remember back in your driver’s training class… stopping distances can increase dramatically in icy conditions. It’s a fact that it can take up to ten times as long to stop on an icy road compared to a dry one.

5) Pay attention to your surroundings. Notice how far the next stop light is or the next corner you need to take. Drive carefully and gently using a constant speed. This will give you more time to act if you need to stop suddenly.

Watch out for road crews with the big snowplows and smaller trucks with plows. They’re lots of slow moving snowplows in snowy conditions.

6) Hang up your phone and just focus on your driving. As Forrest Gump would say, “That’s all I have to say about that!”

7) How to deal with skidding. It’s always a good idea to test out your brakes and steering to test the road and see how slippery it is. If you find it slippery then slow down and take your time.

If you feel your car starting to skid, then take your foot of the gas and allow the speed to drop by itself (don’t hit the brakes) that will only make it worse.

If the car starts to spin out on you, steer into the direction of the spin and allow the car to straighten out.
